We celebrate the deaths and birth of three vastly different but purely influential people: Otis Redding, Alfred Nobel, and Emily Dickinson.
Dickinson’s fame came only after her death and by all accounts, fame would have done her no good, owing to the fact that she lived as a recluse for much of her life. The first volume of her poetry was published 4 years after her death.
Alfred Nobel, if you weren’t aware, invented dynamite and other powerful explosives, though his claim to fame is founding the Nobel Prize.
Finally, Otis Redding, the prolific singer and songwriter, covered the Rolling Stone’s song “Satisfaction” and Keith Richards (who was heavily influenced by African American Blues and Soul musicians) noted that Otis Redding’s version is how he envisioned the song to sound in the first place. Most know Otis for The Dock of the Bay, but enjoy this other cut from Otis Redding, which is probably one of my all-time favorites: I Got Dreams to Remember.
