Aloha and Happy Friday the 13th!
Yesterday marked 54 years since the release of Led Zeppelin’s debut album, simply titled Led Zeppelin (ß link to listen to the entire album). Much like that title, Led Zeppelin did not need anything fancy to sugar coat their music, or doll it up: the music spoke and speaks for itself. Whether it is the opening chords of Kashmir, the multitude of references to Tolkien and LOTR, the technical nature of Stairway to Heaven, or the simple musing of a love songs like All of My Love or Whole Lotta Love, Led Zeppelin checks all the boxes.
Led Zeppelin’s first album opens with Good Times Bad Times, which tells you something about this band. Leading with a song that any other band would love to have in the clean up spot of any album, they thrust themselves onto the musical scene. The album only took them 30 studio hours to complete, which just shows the sheet kinship and musicianship of the band. Below I selected a few choice tracks to peruse or simply dive in and listen to a couple of hours of their greatest hits. Also, I wanted to acknowledge the passing of Jeff Beck (the OG Guitar Hero) this week. The New Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin’s original name, was to be an offshoot of the Yardbirds (which included legends Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck along with Jimmy Page) and Jimmy Page wanted to include Beck in this new group, but ultimately this did not come to fruition. p.s. My favorite band Phish keeps roughly 6 Zeppelin songs in their lineup at any given time. They have good taste…LOL!
