Happy Friday the 13th y’all!
Aside from the obvious, superstitious outlook on Friday the 13th (more on that a little further down) today also marks the birthday of an amazing musician, the legend, the innovator, the funkmaster: Stevie Wonder. Stevie was not born blind, and though that may have added to his legendary status, he never let the fact that he was blind get in the way of this dreams. Call it kismet that Superstition, one of Stevie’s many hits, which describe popular superstitions and their negative effects, was penned by an author whose birthday could land on one of the most superstitious of all days…but Stevie was beyond that! As luck would have it, my favorite band, Phish, happened to cover one of Wonder’s songs, one that is on regular rotation in their vast cannon of music. Check out this top notch version of Boogie on Reggae Woman from Worcester Mass in the summer of 2012. Wonder embraced innovation in music and was one of the first to adopt the Moog Synth, which Phish keyboardist puts clearly on display at around the 4 minute mark. The synth sound mimics the bass heard early on in the song and trades back and forth with the bass to maintain the underlying rhythm of the song.
